Bluesman Peter "Memphis Slim" Chatman is today's Artist Of The Day

Blues Pianist. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, as a young man he frequented Beale Street, where he picked up hints from other piano players. He lived in Helena, Arkansas before moving to Chicago in 1939, where in 1940 he cut one of his trademark tunes, "Beer Drinking Woman" for Bluebird using his nickname, "Memphis Slim". Later that year he teamed up with guitarist "Big Bill" Broonzy and the two musicians played and recorded in Chicago until 1944. It was then that Chatman formed his first group, "The Houserockers" and recorded such classics as "Lend Me Your Love" and "Rockin' The House" During the 1940s and 1950s, he recorded for a number of labels, including Miracle, United, Chess, Vee-Jay, Bluesville, and Folkways. He also performed as soloist and with artists such as Willie Dixon and Sonny Boy Williamson. After an European tour in 1962, he moved to Paris where he recorded and performed regularly. Jimmy Rowles was born in Spokane, Washington, August 19, 1918. Inspired by Andy Kirk, Dick Wilson and Jimmy Lunceford. Jimmy began his professional career in 1935. By 1941, he was playing with Lee and Lester Young and the great Billie Holiday. Establishing himself in jazz, Rowles' career brought him recognition and respect as a master jazz pianist and a five-time Grammy nominee.

One of the most admired pianists in jazz, Oscar Peterson has rightfully claimed the same sort of status as earlier greats such as James P. Johnson, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Fats Waller, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, and Bill Evans. Possibly the most successful artist produced by Canada, he appeared on well over 200 albums spanning six decades and won numerous awards, including eight Grammys. During his career he performed and recorded with, among others, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker. He was beyond doubt an authentic jazz piano virtuoso, with a remarkable and prolific legacy of recordings and performances.(Courtesy of All About Jazz)
